Every major production shakeup brings a wave of wild rumors, but the reality of the Doctor Who competitive bidding war has completely flipped the fandom’s expectations.

Following the October 2nd submission deadline, highly credible industry leaks have finally given us a clear picture of exactly who is in the running to take over the TARDIS for the targeted 2028/2029 broadcast window.

The online community has been buzzing ever since the Brazilian fan handle Puxadinho da Tardis (@puxadinhodatardis.bsky.social) shared verified insider information originally surfaced by @doctorwhobrasil.bsky.social. Along with a breakdown of the submissions, they circulated a vital visual lineup revealing the corporate logos of the production powerhouses that have officially stepped into the arena.

Now that the initial 3-page creative pitches are officially locked in, it is time to look at the scoreboard. While some long-standing community theories hit the bullseye, the BBC’s official invitation to tender (ITT) document shattered several major assumptions about the future of the franchise. Here is our official scorecard of what we got right and what we got spectacularly wrong.

🎯 What We Got Right

The Return Timeline: When word first broke that the show was entering a formal procurement process, fans bracing for a long hiatus predicted the show wouldn’t return until late 2028 or early 2029. The BBC’s official documentation validated this, confirming the target transmission window.

The Disney+ Exit: Rumors had been swirling that the massive, high-budget co-production era with Disney+ would wrap up alongside Russell T Davies’ departure. The text of the new tender confirmed this, shifting the franchise back to a traditional “work-for-hire” model where the BBC retains 100% of global rights and distribution.

The Inevitable In-House Bid: Fandom analysts widely agreed that BBC Studios wouldn’t let its biggest sci-fi IP walk away without a fight. True to form, BBC Studios executives publicly promised to pitch “with gusto,” and leaks confirm they submitted two separate bids from their internal drama labels.

❌ What We Got Wrong (The Big Surprises)

The Showrunner Assumptions: Almost everyone assumed the BBC would be hunting for a single creative mastermind to succeed RTD, following the traditional mold of Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall. Instead, the creative brief surprised the industry by actively discouraging the autocratic showrunner model, calling for a collaborative, multi-writer writers’ room structure.

The “Wales Mandate” Illusion: Because the series has been anchored at Wolf Studios and BBC Wales for two decades, fans assumed a Welsh production base was a strict requirement. In reality, the ITT only stated a preference for Wales, requiring only that the show meet Ofcom’s broader Out-of-London criteria. This loophole allowed STV Studios and Screen Scotland to drop a massive bombshell: a joint bid aggressively pitching to move the entire TARDIS infrastructure across the border to Scotland.

The Separate ‘Line of Duty’ Split: Many fans believed that if Jed Mercurio’s creative empire wanted the gig, it would come as a single, united front. However, the leaks show that HTM Television (Hat Trick Mercurio) and World Productions (the ITV Studios-backed outfit behind Line of Duty and Bodyguard) actually submitted completely independent, competing proposals.

The Hyper-Reliance on Lore: A prevailing fan theory suggested the next production team would double down on comforting nostalgia and classic monsters to steady the ship. The BBC shattered this expectation by explicitly instructing applicants not to over-rely on existing Doctor Who lore, demanding entirely fresh alien threats and contemporary concepts instead.

As the BBC prepares to whittle the list down to an official shortlist on October 9th, it’s clear the next era will look nothing like what we expected.
